There is room across the toe and a close line up the leg, and those two separate one pair here from another. Under a straight leg pant only the last inch of the boot shows. Under a midi skirt the whole shaft is on view and the gap above it matters. The shaft either clears a calf or it does not, and that reads from across a room.

A boot changes what a dress is for, and takes a warm weather one into the coldest weeks of the year. Flat and light and open, and you have arrived at the shoes instead. A pair of heels is a separate conversation, kept for evenings that were planned in advance. Zips run up the inside on most of them and pull tabs sit at the back of a few.
