A black mini dress belongs to whatever happens after it. Necklines carry most of the rest of the difference. A high round on some, a square across the collarbone on others, and a V on the rest.

Black dresses, and what goes over

A maxi is what ends up in the case, folded once and put in flat. What goes over the top changes with the weather, a coat through the cold half of the year and nothing through summer. The white dresses answer the same question in a different light. A hem at the ankle sits differently on a stair than one at the knee.
